Sony Ericsson To Start Selling New Camera Phone In 2Q
Tuesday March 9, 5:28 am ET
SINGAPORE -(Dow Jones)- Sony Ericsson hopes to repeat the success of its highly-popular T610 camera phone with the launch of a new flagship product, the K700 camera phone, the company said Tuesday at a product launch in Singapore.
The Sony Corp. and Telefon AB LM Ericsson phone making joint venture said it will start selling the new phone in the second quarter of this year.
Kazuo Nakai, corporate vice president for the company's Asia Pacific mobile communications division, said the phone would likely cost in the middle- to high-end price bracket of typical mobile phones, although final pricing will depend on handset subsidies offered by mobile phone operators.
Mobile phones without contracts can cost anywhere between S$200
to S$1000, or more in Singapore.
"The T610 was a brand carrier, now the K700 is the main product we want to push. It's the new brand carrier for 2004," Nakai told reporters.
The T610 has proved extremely successful in Asia, helping Sony Ericsson grow market share in key markets like Singapore, where rival Nokia Corp.
has been dominant. Nakai didn't give details on how many T610s it has sold since its launch last year.
The K700 has enhanced camera features compared with the T610 including the ability to store up to 450 pictures with its 32MB memory.
Sony Ericsson also unveiled the S700 mobile phone which will start selling in the fourth quarter of this year. The S700 looks like a camera on one side but flips open in the middle to reveal a typical mobile phone keypad. The unit is expected to be priced at the higher end of the scale, Nakai said.
Sony Ericsson will launch S700i
and K700i
Sony Ericsson will, with great probability, launch two new camera models on
Tuesday. One of them will probably have a camera with a 1,3
megapixel.
According to Mobil the two models will be called S700i and K700i.
S700 probably has a camera with a 1,3 megapixel resolution witch
is also able to record video. The screen will have 260 000 colors.
S700i will probably be sold in a silver color version.
Mobil believes that the camera on the K700i will have VGA quality
an also able to record video. K700i will have 65 000 colors. K700i will
be, if our sources are correct, available in two shades of silver.
Jakob Ryden, product manager for Sony Ericsson Scandinavia says to
Mobil that he does not know of the two models. Furthermore he does not
want to comment on what Sony Ericsson will reveal on Tuesday.
